birding in southern CaliforniaBirding in the Julian & Lake Cuyamaca Area

Julian is a great place to enjoy birding and it encompasses a diversity of habitats from mountain, riparian to desert. Lake Cuyamaca and Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, just a few miles from Julian, provides visitors with the opportunity to enjoy the water along with wildlife viewing and birding. In the early morning and late evening you will almost always see deer, sometimes you will spot a coyote, raccoon or skunk--but there are always birds. In fact, there are over 450 bird species--some are permanent residents, some migrate through, some spend just the winter or summer, but there is always something to watch.

Here is a list of what you are likely to see, depending on the time of year you visit the Julian area. In the cooler months, it is always nice to travel down the hill to Anza Borrego Desert State Park to go bird, wildlife and wildflower viewing there too.
